Another of the “Big Backs” that were popular in 1980s. Heisman Trophy award winner George Rogers was the first round draft pick of the Bum Phillips and the New Orleans Saints in 1981. Led the Saints in rushing each of the 4 years he was with them. Named Offensive Rookie of the Year after leading the NFL with 1674 yards rushing. Currently #3 on the All-Time Saints Career Rushing list with 4267 yards and #7 on the team’s All-Time Career Rushing touchdowns with 23. Still holds the Saints All-Time team record of 206 yards rushing in a single game (against St. Louis Cardinals in 1983)
He was traded to Washington in 1985 and had 3 very productive seasons for the Redskins rushing for a total of 2909 yards – still #12 on the All-Time Franchise Rushing Yards List. Led the NFL in 1986 with 18 touchdowns.
Retired in 1987 as NFL’s #15 All-Time leading Rusher.
