From Buffalo College, Gerry Philbin was a 3rd-round pick of both Detroit and New York in 1964 but he felt the Jets were just more interested. By 1965 he was the Jets starter at the Left-Defensive End. In 1968, the year of the amazing upset of the NFL’s Colts, he got to the opposing quarterback 14 times (some historians say 19). And while sacks were not recorded as such it is agreed that number was the most in the AFL for the 1968 season.Â
He remained with the Jets until 1972 and was briefly with the Eagles in 1973. Finished his career with 1 season in the WFL on the New York Stars. Gerry Philbin is credited with a total of 66.5 sacks in his 10-year AFL\NFL career. He was named All AFL twice – in 1968 and 1969 and is on the the All Time AFL team as well.
