The Golden Arm

A Vintage Image Gallery of Johnny Unitas - NFL Quarterback 1956-1973

The Greatest Quarterback of his time. Johnny Unitas was one of the first NFL passers to perfect timing routes and the 2-minute drill. An undisputed leader on the field he’s credited with 38 game-winning drives. The first quarterback to surpass 40,000 passing yards in a career he threw a touchdown pass in 47 Consecutive Games – a span that started in December of 1956 and lasted until December of 1960.

Originally a 9th-round draft pick from Louisville by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1955, he was released by Steelers and after a brief period playing sand-lot ball he was given a tryout with the Baltimore Colts in 1956. When the Colts starter George Shaw was injured he stepped in and after a shaky start began his legendary career.

By 1957 Johnny Unitas was becoming one of Pro Football elites. Leading the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns he was named to his first Pro Bowl. By the end of his career he had 10 Pro Bowls , 8 All Pro selections and 3 NFL MVP selections. When he retired in 1973, his 1 year not in Baltimore but in San Diego, he was the All-Time Leader in Pass Attempts, Pass Completions, Passing Yards, Passing Touchdowns, and 4th-Quarter Comebacks. He was the Colts starter on NFL Championship teams in 1958, 1959 and 1970.

Not only a great, great quarterback but one of the nicest, kindest men ever to play the game. He was truly loved by every Baltimorean and my husband and I were lucky enough to have season tickets. He was a joy to watch every week and was Wes taken from us much too young.
